weekend love.

Its Monday. Blah. Another week of working and studying that darn physics.
But I'm entering it refreshed, thanks to a wonderful weekend.

On friday we had a movie marathon that we have been meaning to do for a while...five redboxes...a chick flick, action, drama, comedy...and one more drama :) we watched one while cuddling in bed, then hung out together on our comfy red couch while eating popcorn and chilli frito pie.

Saturday we had a good sleep in and had a heart to heart over coffee. We then enjoyed a buy one get one free culvers frozen custard sundae, after some hard core study at the kitchen table (Noah on his Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, and me for my Graduate School entrance exam...why is advancing yourself so darn hard sometimes?!?!).

Sunday we had a date at the original pancake house where we enjoyed some more conversation over some ridiculously good food (after an hour wait to get seated!!). After, we peeked through the sparkles at the Tiffany & Co that was next door, and talked about how many hungry children in Africa we could feed with just one of those rings. (so glad we think alike like that, like values are important in marriage peeps!)

Then we came home and made pumpkin whoopie pies for a sunday night game night with a few other married couples.
Noah made the icing while I made the batter. We tend to do everything together.

Some of the things we talked about this weekend involved fears (about study, the future), kiddos (when do we want them? who will stay home? where should we live?), giggles about how much we would love a housekeeper to do that darn laundry (maybe some day...), when we will go overseas (for missions & to enjoy the wonderful food in Italy) and much more. I love talking about dreams with hubs. We talked about how this is IT - we are living our lives now, and aren't getting any younger. We talked about how we needed to live our lives to the fullest. We are in our prime!

We both don't know what the future holds, but we know that as we continue to trust in the Lord and his goodness, it will be good. Maybe not easy and free of pain & struggles, but good (and hopefully a trip to Italy, healthy babies, our own house, careers that contribute to society and relationships with eachother and Jesus that inspire...to name just a few!!).

Hopes for 2012.

2012. Can you believe its here? It came here so fast. At the change of the year I always find myself reflecting on my life and revel at the goodness that flows out of it. I don't know if other people did this, but as a kid I thought a lot about what my life would be as a grown up, in my mid-twenties. I even wrote letters to myself, that I had to open later...on my 19th, 21st, 28th and 30th birthdays. Whenever I open one, I laugh at the things that consumed my life as 14, 15 and 17 year old. Isn't it amazing how life changes you? how the people you meet leave an indelible mark?

I was talking with Janet (my awesome therapist mom-in-love) about some of the hard steps I was taking this year to further my dreams and education. I have to take a pretty scary exam, that I feel totally unprepared for. I fear failing it, and the humiliation that it could bring. I also fear succeeding, and all the change that that could bring. Silly huh?

Our conversation brought up two things.

1) Not many people take risks and do the really tough, scary things in life. People who do ( like mwa) need to be encouraged that we are doing something that is challenging and will move us forward. Character and beauty is not shaped by taking the easy, predictable road. We have to have the courage to face the fear, and overcome. Then we will have something to say, to offer people and to inspire.

2) Saying goodbye and making a change involves sadness. Its just a part of life. Sadness will flavor your life, and be an underbelly to the changes that take part in it. Jesus never promised their wouldn't be grief or sadness. But he promised goodness. And peace. When we have to let go of the people we love, we leave pieces of our hearts with them (well, at least I do). There are some days that I am just sick of saying goodbye. When you have precious, treasured people in all parts of the world you constantly feel pulled in a million directions. Sometimes I just want to stay put and never leave, because then I won't have the pain of saying goodbye & those familiar feelings of loss and grief. Thinking about them freezes me up inside. I am cognizant of the fact that I am missing out on memories and the lives of those precious ones. Of the 50th birthdays. The Christmas tree decorating. The lessons learned from marriage. The graduations and weddings. I fear people moving on without me. That when we do reconnect, there will be a void....a nameless distance between us.
C.S. Lewis wrote that "No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear."
Good thing perfect love casts out fear.

...Now to work on the perfect love part.

Janet always encourages me to continue to take steps to be the person I want to be. Beyond being 'who I am', what is the type of person I want to be? Do I want to speak words out of love, and not anger/jealously/resentment/bitterness/fear? Do I want to be brave, and not aim for the mediocre? When I face a choice in my marriage to make a fuss about something small, do I remind myself that I want to be a grace-filled and merciful woman?

In the year 2012 I want to keep taking steps to be the person I want to be. To be Courageous. Empowering. Loving. Graceful. Humble. Creative. Soft Spoken. Motivated. Loving.

I want to add beauty to the lives of my family, friends and husband. In whatever shape beauty can take.

Secretly I hope to get into medical school too. I also hope to have the ability to let that go, and embrace what else God has planned if that doesn't work out.

On a more practical note, meal planning, card making, cupcake cooking, love life spicing and date creating are on the list too :) Henri Nouwen also is taking a front seat on my reading list as 'Wounded Healer' and Christian Leadership are on my drawers, next to my bed.

As such, I leave you with some of his words. May you remember who is the Catcher, and may this year teach you new lessons in reaching out and trusting Him. He will grab you, I promise.

"The Flying Rodleighs are trapeze artists who perform in the German circus Simoneit-Barum. When the circus came to Freiburg two years ago, my friends Franz and Reny invited me and my father to see the show. I will never forget how enraptured I became when I first saw the Rodleighs move through the air, flying and catching as elegant dancers. The next day, I returned to the circus to see them again and introduced myself to them as one of their great fans. They invited me to attend their practice sessions, gave me free tickets, asked me to dinner, and suggested I travel with them for a week in the near future. I did, and we became good friends.

"One day, I was sitting with Rodleigh, the leader of the troupe, in his caravan, talking about flying. He said, 'As a flyer, I must have complete trust in my catcher. The public might think that I am the great star of the trapeze, but the real star is Joe, my catcher. He has to be there for me with split-second precision and grab me out of the air as I come to him in the long jump.' 'How does it work?' I asked. 'The secret,' Rodleigh said, 'is that the flyer does nothing and the catcher does everything. When I fly to Joe, I have simply to stretch out my arms and hands and wait for him to catch me and pull me safely over the apron behind the catchbar.'

" 'You do nothing!' I said, surprised. 'Nothing,' Rodleigh repeated. 'The worst thing the flyer can do is to try to catch the catcher. I am not supposed to catch Joe. It's Joe's task to catch me. If I grabbed Joe's wrists, I might break them, or he might break mine, and that would be the end for both of us. A flyer must fly, and a catcher must catch, and the flyer must trust, with outstretched arms, that his catcher will be there for him.'

"When Rodleigh said this with so much conviction, the words of Jesus flashed through my mind: 'Father into your hands I commend my Spirit.' Dying is trusting in the catcher. To care for the dying is to say, 'Don't be afraid. Remember that you are the beloved child of God. He will be there when you make your long jump. Don't try to grab him; he will grab you. Just stretch out your arms and hands and trust, trust, trust."

So Much Birthday and Christmas Joy!!

Gee wizz this time of the year provides so much to blog about!!

Noah and I trekked down to Omaha where we had another christmas with the Clarks! This wonderful family took Noah in to live with them during his last year of high school - when I finally met them in 2010, the summer after we were married, I fell fast in love with them as well! They truly are just like family. They took us in last Christmas, and I was blown away by how they treated us just like one of the kids. We had our own stockings and just as many presents under the tree as their own children! I was SO excited to experience it all again. One of the most special parts of our time with the Clarks is experiencing family life again - all of us 'kids' (Nate (29), Matt (27), Emily 24)) eating breakfast in our pjs in the morning, chilling in the living room playing settlers etc.... I love living with a family again. I appreciate it so much more now than I did as a kid - sorry Mum and Dad!! Brian and Janet (adopted mum and dad in law) are so awesome. They have lived all over Europe, and I always learn so much from there - especially because Janet is a therapist. She always has such wise insight! I feel challenged, intellectually and emotionally when we visit and all the kids are together. Nathan is completing his PhD in medical technology, Matthew works for the Department of Defense in WA D.C. in Cyber Security and Emily has a degree in Neuroscience and works at a hospital with patients that have inner-ear problems. Brian is a career military consultant for the Department of Defense now, and travels the world attending diplomatic functions( how fun!?!) and Janet is the coolest counselor you will ever meet!
I am always encouraged to face my fears, become the person I want to be and savor what matters in life when I am with these people.
Most of all, I am reminded to challenge mediocrity and be an honest and free thinker - and to LOVE.

The best chocolate chip cookies!!

I have tried many a chocolate chip recipe and this is by far my favorite. Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. Not too cake like, and not too gooey. Perfect!

Ingredients:

* 1 cup butter, softened
* 1 cup white sugar
* 1 cup packed brown sugar
* 2 eggs
* 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 2 teaspoons hot water
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 cup chopped walnuts

1) Preheat Oven to 350 degrees (personally, I do 325 because I like them a little chewier)

2)Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt.

3)Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.

4) Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

Amy's Tips:
- Chill dough for 2 hours or so before baking. It makes the cookies more even!
- Use parchment paper, they just bake better!
- If you like your cookies a bit flatter like me, make the dough balls smaller and flatten them out a bit on the tray. They don't expand too much.
- If you like your cookies more cake like, use 1 egg instead of 2.
- throw in pecans, macadamias, white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, cranberries - whatever! its a great basic recipe, and the imagination can go wild!

Desert Road

I love roads. Road trips, runways, brick paths, sandy dunes. Those chosen paths. Sometimes roads are filled with joy and sometimes with sadness. Roads and all of the analogies that involve them fascinate me, they are the inspiration for my blog. The Bible is filled about the roads that people took. The path that led Moses to the burning bush, the garden of Gethsemane, the road to Golgotha, the path were Jesus (then resurrected) spoke with the travelers....
They can lead to wonderful places, if the right one is chosen. Unfortunately sometimes the right roads are the hardest roads. Jesus reminded us that narrow is the road that leads to life (Matt 7).

A road I have become familiar with lately is the desert road. And I am grateful for it. In the desert I have met with Jesus, and my husband, in beautiful and vulnerable ways. there has been tears. there has been pain. but beauty.

the beauty surprised me. I forgot that in seemingly barren places, a beautiful character exists.

When I first moved to Arizona from New Zealand I went into shock with all of the brown.
Brown dirt, brown plants, brown rocks, brown houses. I was used to the ocean, mountains and rolling green hills.
And then, I was mesmerized. The rock formations and the endless desert were fascinating. They invited and challenged. They inspired.

I think in some way my time in Arizona prepared me for our time in the Midwest. During the times of solitude, quiet and loneliness I was able to find inspiration, creativity and peace. I didn't fear the expanse like I used to.

Recently I read this blessing from a book about desert women in the Bible, and it spoke to me.

"May you know the presence
of those who have passed
through the desert before you.
May they point the way
toward freedom
and sustain you
with their stories.
In the wilderness
may there be wellsprings.
May there be wings."

{On this desert road I have found wellsprings}

My husband
My family
Henri Nouewen
Quiet times at Starbucks (ironic, I know)
walks in the park
learning to play tennis
decorating my home
making a home
skype dates with kiwis
pillow talk
deeper understanding
new dreams
completion of dreams
new friends

{I have found wings}

My job as an RN
completeing my education
being a wife, companion and lover
volunteering at the clinic

{Just like a flower can bloom in the desert, among thorns. so can I}

This is a memory of my most favorite dates with Noah, in 2009 when we first got together. We had a magical day in the desert, picking wild apples in the rain, hiking among ancient Indian ruins, eating gormuet pizza, enjoying a picnic with all my favorites amongst the beautiful red rocks, and enjoying discovering all of the new things about eachother. I will treasure it always.

I have a Bachelors Degree!

It was a wonderful day on December 10th, when I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree! Noah and I woke up early He made me a cup of coffee and we hopped in the car! We drove to mankato and met up with our family,Brian and Janet Clark. We had a yummy breakfast then we headed to the University! As you can imagine it was the usual - cap and gown, listening to lots of boring speeches and then my name was announced!
Amy Hensley, Summa Cum Laude
(heck yes, I worked hard for the latin title at the end!!)

Noah gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and other goodies, including a starbucks :)
then we went out to dinner. it was perfect, wonderful and I felt so celebrated!!

It was fun this time around because I already had a job and had passed my nursing boards! last time all of that was still ahead of me (and a wedding, cross country move and new start!). I am so grateful to have completed my education. I have an excellent vocation that I can always use to support my family if need be. It serves others and glorifies the Lord, I am sooooo blessed!!!
I have more plans for school, but even if those never happen I can rest easy having completed a degree of some kind!!!! :)

I am so, so grateful & privileged.
